Sales-call preparation

Discovery call preparation: what prospects should know before the meeting starts

A better discovery call begins before the meeting. The prospect should understand why the conversation exists, what information will be useful, and what the likely next steps are—without being buried in homework.

Explain the purpose of the call

Tell the prospect what the conversation is designed to accomplish. Is it a fit assessment, a diagnostic conversation, a scoped consultation, or a product walkthrough? Vague labels create vague expectations.

Provide only the context that improves the meeting

A short pre-sell page, video, FAQ, or case example can help when the offer requires explanation. Do not require prospects to consume a full library before they earn the right to speak with you.

Ask for useful preparation

Request information that changes the discussion: current situation, goals, constraints, stakeholders, implementation requirements, or relevant documents. Avoid asking the prospect to answer the entire discovery call in a form.

Set a flexible agenda

A simple agenda can reduce uncertainty: understand the situation, determine fit, explore the appropriate next step. Keep enough flexibility for the prospect's actual questions.

Confirm logistics and rescheduling

Make the meeting time, timezone, link or location, attendees, and reschedule path easy to find. Preparation is partly psychological, but it is also operational.
